I stay because this lake, this land is my kin. I am in a familyship with them. If I am their relative and they are mine, then it is my duty and my responsibility to love them fiercely, to defend them, to protect them and not just jump ship and abandon them.
Ashley Finley is an event curator for the Stay Salty: Lakefacing Stories project. She is a birth keeper, writer, speaker, yoga instructor, and educator. She is inspired by the ancestral wisdom of her foremothers, the ever-lasting beauty of nature, and the vivid imagination of a liberated future for marginalized people.
